The movie starred Taraji P Henson, the same character Cookie in empire. I’m a huge fan of empire and if you know her by that name, you probably are a huge fan too.
The movie started off with her being a very young, charming and promising young girl in college. Somehow she met the ‘Mr'(Lyriq Bent) who seemed like her perfect match at first but then he didn’t take too long before driving her nuts.
Shortly after she met the seemingly Mr Right, she lost her mother. It was a trying time for her but as usual you always have that one person who happens to be there for you. For her it was this guy and speaking to her therapist, she said he took advantage of her in her vulnerabilty.
I think so too and one would ask why?

After her mother’s funeral, she offered to drop her boyfriend off at home, one thing led to another and they both had sex. It was her first time and that would mean he took her virginity
She became solely responsible for him making a lot of sacrifices for him including paying his way through school, buying him a car etc.
She also got married to him without the consent of her two sisters and in the twinkle of an eye she became bankrupt. All the money her mother left her (hundreds of thousands of dollars)was gone. There was always something he needed money for.
Fast forward to 18 years of their marriage and it was still the same old game; working multiple jobs to make sure they survived while he just sit at home hoping the battery he’d been working on since college was going to hit the market. All she wanted was for him to get a job and also help her but No he had dreams he was never going to let go of
For this same dream, she lost her mother’s house they were both living in after they couldn’t pay up a loan he got because of this same battery . She had always believed in him and now she was fed up and filed for a divorce. He was sorry and asked her not to give up on him but she was done.
Just few months after, his battery hit the market and he soon became a billionaire. An old friend he once dated helped him pitch to the same company he had been sending emails and letters to for about 2 decades after she got hired into the company. .
He went back to visit his ex-wife at her office with flowers, a cheque for 10 million dollars and the key to her mother’s house he just bought over thanking her for all she had done for him in the last 20 years plus.
Shortly after he was living the life he had promised her all along with the old friend who helped him pitch to the company. He bought her a diamond ring, named his ship after her, took her to all the exotic places, bought a mansion with a magnificent view, got her a wedding dress from the same designer she wanted back them but couldn’t afford and so much more.
Did I forget to mention she had to go through a hysterectomy( removal of the uterus) losing her womb when she was barely 21 after she engaged in a fight when she caught him cheating on her with this same lady.
She had practically lost everything and she soon became a shadow of herself. She fought tooth and nail to get him back but it was too late.
She went as far as shooting him(not sure if he died, Tyler Perry succeeded with playing with our minds lol) and almost killing the new wife whom he had now gotten married to while they were on his ship sailing after their wedding . How she got on the ship was mysterious. She was determined. Sadly, the anchor of the ship clipped her legs and threw her into the sea where she died. How sad!
I’m not quite sure why she felt she was meant to be responsible for him. Maybe love but if you ask me, Ill say she had no reason to and she was the architect of her problem.
At the same time, I also think he had no reason to get back with the other lady. I mean he was very much aware of his escapades with her and what it caused his wife way back. I’ll also say 10 million dollars is in no way measurable to all she had gone through because of him. I know the men will think otherwise lol
Maybe she would have been able to let go if it was someone else (not sure) but definitely not the same lady who caused shattered her hopes of ever having a family
I think every lady should see this movie. Before you ever think of being a superwoman to a man. Take a chill pill and think twice.
Everyone makes mistakes in relationships which always has consequences and the question you should ask yourself before setting out is; Can you handle it?
It is a very very good movie and I sure learnt a lot
Nice job Tyler Perry as always…
